1st Destination: SOUTH AFRICA

Brianna and The Saturn Return Project launched the journey in beautiful South Africa, at the home of esteemed agency TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris.

Why South Africa? And more specifically, why TBWA\South Africa?

South Africa shone in the global spotlight in 2010, playing gracious host to the World Cup. More than 300,000 people visited the country for the games between June and July of that year. Hundreds of millions more tuned in daily around the globe.

As the continent of Africa and the country of South Africa continue to prove to be markets to watch, so does the agency founded by John Hunt and Reg Lascaris (*note: want to hear more from Reg himself? Click here).

Just a few of the accolades that TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris won in 2010 (the year leading up to partnership with The Saturn Return Project™) include:

  • Agency of the Decade (AdReview 2010 and Finance Week
  • International Agency of the Year Runner-up (Advertising Age)
  • 3rd Best Global Creative Agency Internationally (Creativity Magazine's Annual 2010 Report)
  • Winner of Africa's First D&AD Black Pencil (for the Zimbabwean)
  • ADC Black Cube for best-in-show advertising (The Art Director's Club)
  • Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival (for its Southern African Counter-Trafficking Assistance Programme- SACTAP- Campaign)
Al Mackay commented in an optimistic post on the TBWA\South Africa blog in 2010 that, "This seems to have been the year that South African brands really started to pile into social media, and understand the new dynamic of consumer participation."

TBWA\South Africa has three offices throughout the country: one in Johannesburg, one in Cape Town and one in Durban.

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Its people claim to work hard and play even harder: an ideal destination for The Saturn Return Project.

Cape Town is the second biggest city in South Africa in terms of population, though largest in land area. This beautiful port city is celebrated as one of the most multicultural, creative cities in the world. Perhaps that is why it is the biggest tourist destination in South Africa.

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa and popular for its warm climate, beaches and busy port. Like much of South Africa, given its rich and storied history, the city blends many cultures and traditions to build a foundation and future that is current and harmonious, but with deep roots in a post-apartheid world.

Brianna took The Saturn Return Project™ to the TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris offices in all three cities to learn what it meant to be an advertising, marketing and communications professional in South Africa in 2011.
